Updated: Feb 21, 2023
La Porte, IN – Healthcare Foundation of La Porte (HFL) awarded 10 automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) to seven (7) La Porte County organizations at a celebration held in The Gathering space within HFL’s new Conference & Learning Center located on East Shore Parkway in La Porte.
The AED grants, which total $18,451, will provide the opportunity for community members at the following organizations to offer life-saving measures in the event a person suffers sudden cardiac arrest:
● Notre Dame Catholic School - 1 AED
● Door Prairie Christian Preschool and Daycare - 1 AED
● LaCrosse Public Library - 1 AED
● Hanna United Methodist Church - 1 AED
● Sacred Heart Apostolic School - 3 AEDs
● Sacred Heart Food Pantry at St. Mary’s - 1 AED
● Holy Family Parish - St. Peter Church - 2 AEDs
In addition to the AEDs, HFL grants AED storage cabinets and signage, with grantees selecting the cabinet and signage styles that best meet their needs.
Placing AEDs in key places can save lives. Since 2017, HFL has gifted close to 100 AEDs across La Porte County as part of the When Seconds Count AED Initiative. Learn more about the AED Collaborative at laportecountyems.com.
Dr. Gary Wheeland, HFL Board Member, spoke of the importance of easy access and the impact a quick response can have on the outcome of sudden cardiac arrest. Pierce Szubelak, Sales Account Manager for Stryker, provided a demonstration to attendees, discussed maintenance, and facilitated a lively question and answer session.
Maria Fruth, HFL President and CEO, closed the ceremony by sharing, “every second counts when someone is suffering from sudden cardiac arrest. The more accessible AEDs become, and the more familiar the community is with using them, the more lives that will be saved.”
Since opening its doors in 2017, HFL has invested over $30 million in the community. Please visit HFL’s website at hflaporte.org to learn more about HFL’s grants and community impact.
