Active Living in La Porte County
As part of the HEAL Initiative, the Active Living Council is working to create a La Porte County that is an all-inclusive, active living environment with state-of-the-art, multi-use facilities that excites our citizens to achieve health. It takes our county as whole – you included! – to make this happen. It is our vision that La Porte County is one of the 10 healthiest communities in Indiana by 2030. Working together is where it all starts.

How will we know what success looks like?
Success can be measured in many ways, but one way to measure the progress of the HEAL Initiative is by keeping track of indicators over time. Indicators tell a story of “how we are doing” in various areas. See below for the indicators we are using to track healthy eating progress in La Porte County!

Explore Playon, "the Zillow of active living"

Since November 2023, HFL has been partnering with Playon to increase awareness of community activities that support active living in La Porte County. Founded by La Porte natives Sam Maule and Marc Oestreich, Playon is a digital platform that houses all of La Porte County’s active living resources. Residents can easily search and filter through every venue, park, activity, and organization in the area, from walking trails to yoga classes and everything in between.

Soon to be released as a mobile app, Playon empowers residents to search and discover new ways to be active. This includes finding and registering for sports, clubs, groups, and classes they love as well as trying new experiences like ice skating, snowshoeing, mountain biking, dance, and more.

Smart Cycling Youth Clinic

On June 11th, 2022, Bob's Bicycles, the League of American Bicyclists, PNC Bank, City of La Porte Park and Recreation, City of La Porte Fire Department, and Health Foundation of La Porte joined forces to offer the first Smart Cycling Youth Clinic for kids ages 6-12.

The event taught young riders smart cycling skills, with safety stations including helmet fitting, bicycle safety, starting/stopping, riding in a straight line, avoiding hazards, balancing, scanning and signaling, and turning and yielding. Youth received a certificate of achievement, a free helmet provided by PNC Bank, and several great giveaways.
